The month of April is known for bringing A LOT of rain to Hastings County. It might sound like kind of a downer, but honestly…I actually like rainy days! I love the sound of rain coming down, I enjoy cozying up with a tea, a blanket and a good book while watching the rain stream down the windows, and I even look forward to a good thunderstorm. However, when you have kids at home on a rainy day…it’s a completely different story.
To put it mildly, our two boys are outside lovers! They love playing basketball and hockey in the driveway. They love riding their bikes and playing in their sandbox. So, when it’s pouring down rain and playing outside isn’t an option…how do you keep them entertained all day long without going completely bonkers? That’s a great question. While I’d love to say curl up on the couch with some snacks and make it a Netflix day…kids get antsy.
So, I’ve put together some different ideas to help get you through those rainy Spring days here in Hastings County!
Board Games & Puzzles – In our family, we have family game nights. So, we have quite the board game collection. We also do puzzles together as a family! We have a few challenging ones that keep our guys (and us!) busy for quite a while. They usually end up occupying our dining room table for days. Sometimes weeks!
Baking – Got little bakers in the house? A rainy day is the perfect time to break out the measuring cups and mixing bowls and let the kids get their hands messy! Favourites in our house include; muffins, cookies, and cupcakes! Your house will smell pretty awesome too.
Scavenger Hunt – A spoon, Lego, sports equipment – the possibilities are endless! Give the kids a list items they can find around the house and send them on an indoor scavenger hunt! If your kids are a bit older, make it a little more challenging with items that they REALLY have to use their imagination and search for!
Hide & Go Seek…indoors! – Who doesn’t love a game of hide and go seek, am I right? Our boys LOVE it. So, if outside isn’t an option, play inside! They know certain rooms are off-limits, but everything else is fair game! My husband and I have been known to join in…
Build a Fort – Who remembers grabbing bed sheets out of the linen closet when Mom wasn’t looking and building cool forts with them? I certainly do and as it turns out…kids still LOVE building forts! Couch cushions, blankets, sheets, pillows – give them all the supplies they need and let them get creative!
Nerf + Lego – With two boys in the house, it’s pretty much guaranteed that we have our fair share of Lego and Nerf guns. So, when I found a pin on Pinterest combining the two…I knew I had a fun activity the boys would love! Simply put, you make targets out of Lego to shoot Nerf darts at! It keeps the kids happy and busy and as a bonus…no more darts flying past my head in the kitchen!
If all these indoor ideas at home just don’t cut it, Hastings County also has plenty of museums, libraries, and indoor play areas to keep the kiddos busy for a few hours on those inevitable rainy days of Spring. But let’s keep our fingers crossed for warm and dry weather so we can enjoy all those outdoor activities we love so much! Check out the Hastings County Facebook page for details on all the upcoming activities in the area this Spring!
Have fun and…stay dry!
